"It's a relief to see you looking yourself," her best friend said. Polly was shocked- who else had she seemed to be? The truth was devastating She was a woman drinking around the clock, battling her husband, endangering her children, jeopardizing her career. And yet, there was no other way to get through the days, was there? Her terrible downward slide could stop only when she hit rock bottom and faced the hell of getting up again.

"Startling, compelling, clear-headed, eloquent." "a rare book...instead of telling one person's tale, A CRAVING achieves the universality of any good fiction"-Newsday

Jealousy. Anger. Shame. Love. Loss. A key element of Emily Arnold’s genius is her ability to express an amazing range of feelings. There isn’t a sentence in A Craving that isn’t charged. The reader is swept along with the shy, sensitive protagonist Polly, an artist, as she descends into the slough of alcoholism. The book starts in the middle of Polly’s story, when she has moved with her family to New Hampshire and is dealing with an authoritarian husband, jealousy over his perceived intimacy with a friend, guilt over not spending enough time with her two adoring children and trying to live up to the high expectations everyone seems to have of her -- wife, mother, friend, cook, gardener, illustrator, writer. In trying to hold on to everything, she is about to lose everything. The worst aspect of addiction, of course, is that love goes -- the craving for whatever the dependency might be supersedes all. And so it is with Polly. This is a harrowing, beautifully written journey, filled with insights into the addictive personality, and worth every step of the ultimately triumphant way.

I have never fully understood addiction. Even though I have known numerous tobacco addicts, a few alcoholics, both current and former, and even a few heroin addicts, the closest I have come personally is a mild "addiction" to ice cream, the worst impact of which is an unwanted additional ten or fifteen pounds. So Emily Arnold's "A Craving" was a revelation to me. She shows us Polly's relentless descent into self destruction through a narrative laced throughout with wrenching details that could only be informed by personal experience. We see Polly having numerous opportunities to embrace help and health only to suffer with her as she discards them for the instant relief of the next drink. For much of the book it is a painful, heartbreaking story. Finally, one of the help opportunities takes as she is brought to an AA meeting and, after yet another lapse, returns, is able to admit she is indeed an alcoholic and begins to take the baby steps to recovery. Ultimately, the book is inspirational the fierce addiction to alcohol can be defeated by the combination of faith, concepts (i.e. the famous 12 steps), desperation born of bottoming out, and ferocious determination. Not an easy combination to achieve since, according to the book, only one out of 35 make it. I feel grateful to the author for sharing this harrowing journey and for courageously educating me and countless other readers on what it means to be an alcoholic and what the process of rehabilitation requires.

"A Carving" by Emily Arnold was a good contemporary fiction that deals with the alcohol addition. It was very sad to see this woman Polly lose it all ....her marriage, children, friends and career to alcohol. In this ready you can see how this author takes the reader through Polly's life which was full of ''rationalizations, denials, defensiveness, defeat and the ultimately salvation and repairing job." This novel is a great help for any one who is in need of striving to get control of their lives or anyone needing some self awareness and help in the problem of 'alcohol.' It is truly there for you if you really want the help. I found "A Carving" not a easy read but it was a very enlighten read and I am sure it was be of help to anyone seeking the help. One thing is for sure after the read you will definitely understand what it means to be a alcoholic and even the rehabilitation that it will require to you to achieve the goal.

"A Carving" was written in a way that it will stay with you long after the read. For Polly, it was 'anger, shame, jealousy, love and loss' all mixed up in a large range of feelings. Will she be able to find herself without her 'demon' lover, alcohol? Will she be able to stop blaming everyone for all of her problems and see that she is the only person that can truly save 'Polly,' and even developed more as the artist and save her marriage? This is the time that I say you must pick up the good read to see how this author was able to bring it all out to the reader.

This was definitely a book with depth and you may be able to learn a lot from "A Carving" and Yes, I would recommend this novel as a excellent read.
Emily Arnold has written a brave story of a woman's struggle with finding her authentic self without her demon lover, alcohol.
The protagonist, artist Polly, moves from blaming everyone for her problems to discovering that she is the only one who can save herself. It's a compelling read.
I read the Craving recently on my . Arnold captures so much in psychological nuance, as her main character grapples with her crumbling grasp on her most important relationships, including her relationship with herself, under the influence of her alcoholism. I don't go into a liquor store the same way anymore I see it though Polly's eyes. I completely enjoyed connecting with Arnold in a medium very different from her writing for children. She has such range!
